Urquhart Castle launches winter workshops for children

Urquhart Castle has launched a series of winter workshops designed to help children learn what life was like in the castle in years gone by.

Historic Scotland has announced that Urquhart Castle will host a series of winter workshops aimed at teaching children about life in the castle during previous centuries. The first workshop, on 19 November 2011, is titled Knights School’ and will youngsters give the chance to learn about the life of a knight. Children will get the opportunity to hold an authentic knight’s helmet and make their own.

Euan Fraser, Manager of Urquhart Catle, said; 'This is a great opportunity for families to find out more about the castle’s past. Its walls hold a multitude of secrets and these workshops are designed to transport young visitors into the past by experiencing what life would have been like in years gone by. We’ve aimed to offer something for everyone – from Jacobites and charging knights through to the elaborate clothing of those who called the castle home and we look forward to welcoming young visitors to the site.'

The workshop themes are as follows: 17 December 2011 - Jacobite for a day; 21 January 2012 - Castle life; 18 February 2012 - Attackers and defenders; 17 March 2012 - Castle decorations.
