National Geographic names West Highland Way as a world class hike

The West Highland Way has been named as one of National Geographic's 'world's best hikes'.

National Geographic has named the West Highland Way in a list of twenty of the 'world's best hikes'. The 96-mile-round trail, which runs from Milngavie to Fort William, is the only UK walk to have made National Geographic's list and takes its place alongside epic walks such as the Santa Cruz Trek in Peru, the Way of St James in Spain and the Great Himalaya Trail in Nepal.

National Geographic writer Doug Schnitzspahn describes the West Highland Way as a walk which 'dives straight into the most rugged and romantic swathe of the Scottish landscape', going on to describe Scotland's weather as 'notoriously bad'.

The West Highland Way was opened in 1980, as the first of Scotland's system of Great Trails and is used by around 80,000 people per year. The route is part of a much older system of roads and trails, including ancient droving roads, used by cattle farmers, and coach routes which avoided boggy ground.

Two years ago, the West Highland Way became part of the International Appalachian Trail, something which National Geographic have also mentioned - the Trail begins in Maine in the USA and runs through Canda and Greenland, along a trail which includes the same primordial range of mountains.
