Historic Scotland unveils dramatic new historic interpretation

Historic Scotland has announced details of a dramatic new interpretation at Edinburgh Castle.

Historic Scotland has announced details of a dramatic new interpretation at Edinburgh Castle, which tells the story of Scotland's history through a series of colourful illustrations. The agency worked with more than thirty specialists, both within and outside Historic Scotland, and consulted 'huge amounts' of written material and illustrations to create a new resource for visitors to the castle. Among the episodes featured are the arrival of the Romans, the firing of the castle guns in 1745 and the arrival of the cannon Mons Meg at the castle in 1457 (pictured).

Stephen Duncan, Director of Commercial and Touristm at Historic Scotland, explained: 'The new interpretation offer a surprising amount of detail. In some cases, the content might alter preconceptions, often contradicting popular myths.

'Each reconstruction focuses on a key episode in the history of the Castle. We have made them as accurate as possible, but in cases where expert opinion was divided or the evidence ambiguous, they inevitably involve elements of informed speculation. Where possible, the faces in the illustrations are based on historic images.'

Also included within the new displays are seven new panorama illustrations showing views of Edinburgh, which pick out key features in the spectacular landscape and skyline.
