Scottish history - Fort George created in miniature

Scotland's Fort George has been recreated in miniature to help visitors appreciate the scale and extent of the historic fortification.

Fort George near Inverness, one of the finest military fortifications in Europe, has been recreated in miniature to help visitors to understand the scale of the historic site.

The Fort was commissioned by George II in 1748 after the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie at Culloden as a measure against any further Jacobite unrest. Positioned strategically on the Moray Firth, the Fort was designed as an impenetrable army base – designed on a monumental scale using the most sophisticated defence standards.

The bronze model, designed by local company Inver Models, will stand at the entrance to the fort and will be one of the first thing that visitors see.

Stephen Duncan, Director of Commercial and Tourism for Historic Scotland, who care for Fort George, said: 'Fort George is one of the most important military forts in Europe, with a fascinating past. The Fort is consistently one of Historic Scotland’s top ten most visited sites annually with visitors keen to find out more about its history and experience the blend of historical and modern military life. It is a very large site though, and many visitors don’t initially appreciate its scale and extent, which can lead to them potentially missing out on some of the hidden gems on site. We hope that the model will provide a great new addition to the site.'
