Scottish archaeology - Treasure Trove 2011 to 2012 report

Members of the public claimed more than £36,000 in rewards for historic items found in Scotland last year, the Treasure Trove report for 2011-2012 has revealed.

The Treasure Trove report for 2011-2012 has revealed that members of the public claimed a total of over £36,000 in rewards for historic items discovered in Scotland last year. Individual rewards claimed ranged from £15 to £6,000. During 2011 and 2012, the Treasure Trove unit dealt with 2,045 individual finds, with 152 artefacts claimed by the Crown and gifted to museums.

Among the finds for the period 2011-2012 were:

A post-medieval trade weight set, found in Fortrose and of a type used by merchants and which, although illegal for burgh trade in Scotland, may have been used in markets on the outskirts of a burgh.

A rare Roman eagle-headed terminal (from Selkirk) which was probably used on a Roman wagon and is a rare find in Britain and is the first such mount discovered in Scotland.

A 17th century gold ring found in Cullen - inscribed with the wording 'The Lord is my helper', a quote from Hebrews 13:6 in the King James Bible.

A medieval silver gilt ring found in Fife, still bearing traces of its gilding. The ring, which may have been given as a wedding ring, is inscribed with the wording 'IHESUN' reading 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.

A Bronze Age axehead found in Wanlockhead which was recovered from a stream bed whilst its finder was panning for gold.
