New free smartphone app explores World War One sites

A new smartphone app takes visitors to five unique World War I sites in France and Belgium.

A new free smartphone app allows visitors to experience five World War I sites in France and Belgium. The app, named 'Diary 14-18' accompanies 21st century film maker Guillame Naylor, whose grandfather was a stretcher-bearer in World War I.

The five episodes of the collection can each be used separately from the others. The story takes in five areas - the Nord, the Pas de Calais, the Somme, the Aisne and Western Flanders, each one being a trail made up of 7 to 10 stages to be done on foot or by car. Guillaume meets historians, walkers and soldiers’ great-grandchildren who have come, like him, to honour the memory of their forebears.

The app contains enhanced-reality video material such as battle scenes, life in the trenches and camaraderie, taking the visitor into the very heart of the action. A geo-localisation system and an interactive map enable the user to find his or her way around and make his or her way to the various sites. This smartphone app is available free of charge at the Apple store and the Google store in four languages: English, French, Dutch and German.

To download the app, visit the Interreg IVA France-Wallonie-Vlaanderen website.
