Brownies discover history of Iona

A group of Brownies has been discovering the history of Iona and have created artwork to be displayed in a series of public exhibitions.

A group of Brownies has been learning about the history of Iona and the nuns who lived there, using their new knowledge to create artwork which will be displayed to the public at three different locations. The girls, who are aged between seven and ten, have presented their artwork to St Ronan's Chapel, where it will be displayed until 30 April, before moving on to Bunessan and then to Tobermory.

Historic Scotland Learning Development Officer Fiona Davidson said: 'This was the first time that the two Mull Brownie groups had taken part in a project like this. It started with a visit to Iona, which the two Rainbow groups also attended,  so that they could learn about the history of the nunnery and Abbess Anna McLean in particular.

'They learned about what life was like for the women who lived at the nunnery and this allowed us to explore aspects such as the fabrics that would have been worn and the plants and herbs that would have been used medicinally. It has been a wonderful success and as a result the Brownies were invited to present their project and lead tours of the nunnery to the experts that visited Iona to look at new research. Now, with this exhibition, more people will be able to discover some fascinating facts about the nunnery as we take it on tour.'
